Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Get an air source heat pump completely free
The government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards a new heat pump, or £9,000 if you heat your home with oil or LPG and aren't on mains gas. We handle the application and take the grant straight off your quote, so a Trianco Activair R290 3.2kW wall hung indoor heat pump costs you nothing.
Free where we fit fewer than 3 radiators and you have an external wall longer than 5ft that isn't above a window.
- MCS certified installers
- Free home survey, no obligation
- Grant paperwork done for you

Two heat pump deadlines on 31 March 2027
0% VAT on heat pump installs ends and goes to 5%. And if your home runs on oil or LPG, the extra £1,500 grant (£9,000 instead of £7,500) ends the same day. A heat pump takes a survey, design and grant application before install, so don't leave it to March.

What is an air source heat pump?
It's a unit that sits outside your home and pulls heat out of the air, even on cold days, then pumps it into your radiators and hot water cylinder. It runs on electricity, but for every unit it uses it delivers three to four units of heat. That's why it can replace a gas, oil or LPG boiler and cost less to run.
Pair it with solar panels and much of the electricity it needs during the day comes from your own roof.
How the £7,500 grant works
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant, not a loan, so there's nothing to pay back. It's paid through your installer, which means we apply for it and it's deducted from your quote before you pay anything.
You're likely to qualify if you
- Own the property (your home, a second home or a home you let out)
- Live in England or Wales
- Are replacing gas, oil, LPG or electric heating
The grant can't be used
- To replace an existing heat pump or other low carbon heating
- For social housing
- On a home that has already had government funding for a heat pump
- For a hybrid heat pump system
Want to spread the rest of the cost? See our finance options. On a lower income? You may qualify for the Warm Homes: Local Grant.
Is my home suitable?
Most homes are. The survey confirms it, and some homes need extra insulation or a few larger radiators first. You'll need:
- Outside space: roughly 2m x 1m of ground for the outdoor unit, with room for air to flow in front of it.
- A hot water cylinder: or space for one. It can often go where a combi boiler is now, in a large cupboard or the garage.
- Reasonable insulation: loft and cavity wall insulation help the heat pump run efficiently.

Heat pump questions
How much is the heat pump grant?
£7,500 towards an air source heat pump through the government's Boiler Upgrade Scheme. If your home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection, you can get an extra £1,500 (£9,000 in total) until March 2027.
Who can get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
Property owners in England and Wales, including landlords and second-home owners, who are replacing fossil fuel heating such as gas, oil, LPG or electric. You can't use it to replace an existing heat pump or other low carbon system, and it isn't available for social housing or homes that have already had government funding for a heat pump.
Do I have to apply for the grant myself?
No. The grant is paid through your MCS certified installer, so we apply for it and take it straight off your quote. You don't pay it back.
Does my home need to be well insulated?
Good insulation improves efficiency and lowers running costs. Your installer will assess your current insulation during the survey.
Will my existing radiators work?
Some homes need larger radiators to work at the lower flow temperatures heat pumps use. Your engineer calculates this as part of the heat loss assessment.
Do I need planning permission?
Most installations are permitted development. Conservation areas and listed buildings are exceptions.
Can I combine a heat pump with solar panels?
Yes - and it's one of the most effective combinations available. Your solar panels generate electricity during the day; your heat pump uses it for heating and hot water.
